Dried gourds or ‘kolodjia’ held a special place in Cypriot tradition. They are well known for their engraved decoration with a collection of themes drawn from everyday rural life and Greek mythology. Shepherds, while supervising their herds during grazing, used to carve the gourds using a little knife. Cypriots used the gourd for keeping water and wine or as a holster for cutlery at home but also as a musical instrument (tamboura). After their engraving. molten charcoal and oil is applied to get their final color. Nor days, very few people are left who know this particular art
